A new year is approaching so I assume many of us will be detoxing. Whether that’s a social media detox, clutter detox or a mind detox, we’re all clearing out in order to prepare ourselves for what 2017 will bring. The most popular detox I’m aware of is a body detox; the ridding of toxic substances which can be poisonous or cause negative health effects. I’m all down for that and I think it’s cool how such has become so popular, but I think it’s a shame that we don’t apply the same understanding to the health of our hearts.
‘Break free from the destructive power of guilt, anger, greed, and jealousy.’
Enemies of the Heart – our next book club read – focuses on four emotions which when left unchallenged can infiltrate our lives and carry the ability to destroy our relationships, careers and homes. It’s all well and good becoming aware of the toxins within our hearts but this book also offers biblical direction to help us to take charge of the emotions that wish to dominate us.
‘How do we guard — or maybe it would be more appropriate to say, guard against — our hearts? How do we monitor what’s going on in that secret place that has the potential to go public at any moment?’
When we’re truly honest with ourselves we become aware of the toxins within our hearts, but quite often we’re not entirely sure what to do with the new found knowledge. I love the saying that says, ‘God loves us too much to leave us the way we are.’ This means that in His faithfulness He will both reveal and heal us of the toxins that have the ability to destroy us. So partner with Him, beloved. Journey with Him and trust that as He reveals to you the impurities in your heart He will cleanse you from them.
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.– Ezekiel 36: 25 – 26
I believe this will be a fantastic book to start 2017 off with! I’m expecting it to be a difficult read as being honest about the condition of your heart is never easy, but I’m excited that we won’t be journeying through healing alone but as a group. If you’d like to join the online LSBookClub just order yourself a copy and sign up here. You’ll then be added to our Whatsapp group where we have our weekly discussions, fellowship and have general chit chat. We’ll begin reading on Jan 9th but in the meantime don’t hesitate to drop us a message if you have any questions!
